The site

The Chalkmead site is located at the junction of Nutfield Road and Deans Road and formerly contained the 50-bedroom, predominantly two storey Chalkmead Care Home. The site benefits from an open frontage, with mature trees helping to create an attractive setting between the building and the surrounding roads.

Access to the site was predominantly via Deans Road on its northern boundary with additional pedestrian access from Nutfield Road.

Chalkmead Care Home has been closed since 2022 and has recently been demolished. Here are some photographs of how the building used to appear and how the site currently looks behind the hoarding.

... and the surrounding area

The area around the site is residential in nature with 2-3 storey semi-detached 19th and 20th century houses clad in orange and red brick with slate/tiled roofs being the most common. The three storey apartment block, Stoneham Place is adjacent to the Chalkmead site, in Wolfendale Close. A selection of photographs showing the context of the site appears below.

Local amenities

Merstham offers excellent amenities, including local shopping and leisure facilities. Local buses stop immediately outside the site, with services to Redhill, East Surrey Hospital and Reigate. The development is also within walking distance of Merstham rail station which offers regular services via Southern Railway and to Reigate, Gatwick Airport (via Redhill) Horsham and London, and further afield via Thameslink trains.
